Set back on the corner of Kloof and De Lorentz Streets in Cape Town, there she sits, our flagship Jane Valken store. I have such a love for this space that I can spend hours here moving everything around and remerchandising. There is a beautiful sense of calm to this store that from the outside seems much smaller than it is.
I studied pattern making and fashion design what seems like a prehistoric time period ago and launched my first runway collection in 2006. I used hundreds of meters of white handloomed Indian cotton and made all the patterns myself from scratch. I hand cut every layer of each dress and lived on cornflakes for a month… I am no longer a fan.
I always dreamt of having our own store… Cecil (Valken) and I went on a trip to India to go source fabric and came back with a container of furniture and two bicycles. A million years later and here we are today.
Now I will be the first to admit that I am barely able to keep a cactus alive, thus it is a sheer miracle that the bougainvillea that cascades our windows in Kalk Bay are always in bloom. Our beautiful Kalk Bay store was a real passion project and we enjoyed every minute of creating our own mark in the already vibrant and laidback little village in Kalk Bay.
Our Watershed store is like a long shoebox crammed with bright florals and our own gemstone jewellery. The Watershed is open seven days a week throughout the year.
